Kids Helping Kids Lose Weight

Childhood obesity has developed into a serious health problem in the United States and many other parts of the world. According to one study conducted by the Center For Disease Control and Prevention, over 15% of children ages 6 to 9 were overweight between 1999 and 2000. Statistics show that this figure is still on the rise. There is much that parents can do to help their children lose weight and get on a healthy diet and exercise plan, but kids can also help kids lose weight by being supportive, understanding the benefits of being a healthy weight, and helping their friends get active.

One of the biggest causes of obesity in children is an overly sedentary lifestyle. Kids can do a lot to help their friends get active. Instead of sitting inside and playing video games all day, they can go outside and play sports or ride bikes. Even playing simple childish games like hide-and-seek will get kids doing some physical activity. Parents can tell their kids to go outside and play, but getting children to play together is a much more powerful impetus to get active.

If parents educate their children about the benefits of eating healthy and getting exercise, they will be able to pass that information on to their friends and help them lose weight. While younger children may not be able to understand all of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, they can definitely grasp the basics. Older children and teenagers often look to their peers for advice, so if parents teach their kids about maintaining a healthy weight when they are young they will remember it and share it with their friends as they get older.

You can also get kids involved in youth support groups for losing weight. These groups can help kids by showing that they are not alone in their struggles and providing realistic tips for how to lose weight.
