Causes of Headache: Reasons Why You’re Experiencing Headache Pain

Simply defined, headache pain is that which occurs in the head or upper neck. In 2007 the International Headache Society agreed upon an updated classification system, since there are numerous headache causes. The three major categories of headache are primary and secondary headaches, and cranial neuralgias. Let’s take a deep look at these categories, and the different causes of headache.

Are you triggering your own headaches by your lifestyle and/or diet choices?

  1. Primary headaches: tension, migraine and cluster headaches

Environmental and internal stress is the usual triggers for tension headaches. Migraine headache is caused by vasodilatation, resulting in the discharge of chemicals from nerve fibers that loop around the large arteries of the brain. Abnormalities in the hypothalamus likely play a role in cluster headaches, though the causes of headache pain of this type are still unknown.

  1. Secondary headaches: caused by an underlying structural problem in the head or neck

There are numerous causes of headache (secondary), including bleeding in the brain, tumor, or meningitis or encephalitis. Medical procedures like spinal tap or epidural also produce secondary headache in individuals. These headaches can also be caused by congestion, dental and nasal conditions, and ear infections.

  1. Cranial neuralgias, facial pain and other headaches

Cranial neuralgia describes a group of headaches that come about because the nerves in the head and upper neck become irritated and are the cause of the head pain. Similar to the causes of headache, pain originating in the face, or elsewhere, may be caused by a wound, an infection in a structure of the face, a nerve disorder, or it may occur for no known reason.

The causes of headache listed above are some of the most common, but these usual suspects don’t always explain the pain in your head. Some headache triggers are just plain odd, like perfume, storms, and earrings – or even orgasms! Counteract your pain with homeopathy, an effective form of headache relief.
